Somme WW1 memorial trip Friday 29th April to Monday 2nd May 2016

Our trip to France this year was to visit some of the sites around the Somme to mark the 100th Anniversary of WW1.  It proved to be the most popular of all the trips so far with fourteen bikes of which four carried pillions.

We all met up at the Holiday Inn,Dover  on Friday night for dinner and a beer before getting up for an early start on Saturday morning to catch the Eurotunnel to Calais which subsequently was delayed two and a half hours.

We were however very lucky with the weather and it proved to be a dry and mostly sunny weekend away.

On the route down we stopped off at Etaples Military Cemetery which is massive and contains over 10,000 graves plus a small Chinese Cemetery on the way to the hotel.

A good night out was then had in Amiens in a restaurant overlooking the Somme.

On Sunday we had a leisurely ride out to Contay Cemetery followed by visiting the large Theipval Memorial to the missing of the Somme. It has some 72,195 names of officers and men with no known graves.

We then called into Pozieres Memorial before having Lunch at the Old Blighty Cafe. The afternoon we walked around the Lochnagar Crater and visited the WW1 Museum in Albert before returning back to our hotel.

Once back at the Hotel another night out was had in Amiens.

On Monday Morning we then headed off to Caen calling in at Rouen to put a cross on the grave of one of Peter Robin’s relatives then catching the ferry back to Portsmouth arriving back in England around 21.30.

No real mishaps, other that our small delay with eurotunnel at the start and a road closer on the A31 on our way home.

Due to the popularity of these trips I am already planning a trip to Brittany, France next year over the Bank Holiday weekend 27th, 28th 29th May.
Details of the trip will be out late August for those who want to join me.
